the predictions cast:
both choices each as heady.
which path would he take?
men from diff'rent lands
side by side at the harbour
come and go like tides
the stillness of rain
the peaceful patters and drips
in the great peng shell
flying high above,
soothing and calming rough seas.
goddess and dragon.
at the beach they met,
soon started something quite new.
donkey and sea horse.
underneath his charge,
constant as the days that pass -
ev’ry season, all.
just leave; go under -
my eyes are trained on your heart.

where’s that thing going?
together they came
to discuss their boundaries
a bird parley-ment
in a cave he sits
conjuring, taming, dragons.
waiting, practicing.

bowls shared, problems halved
that tranquil moment
when you complete your ascent -
effort reaps reward
a tree becomes goods,
stage by stage and man by man.

rules and wants collide
yours ends, others' starts
don't wash where others will drink
think before you act
exiles and hermits
sep'rate from all settlement
their own rules to keep
attentive, attuned
to the master's instructions.

pilgrims on the trail
of places the Buddha taught
learning as they go
he chose how to die -
made a sacrifice of hope.
mellified man san.
distant Indian
mountains provide moment of
full contemplation
a sword in his mouth
no body to support him
he takes his revenge
at the water’s edge
a life of serenity
opulence and fear
