these men are our brothers and
not all in headgear
from across Asia
these men are our brothers in
different headgear
protecting our heads,
we were whipped
scratched
from all sides.
running from sandstorms.
his psychic power
brought peace, even to the beasts.
Maudgalyāyana.
circle of old friends,
steadfast companions they are
Buddha’s disciples
in a drunken state
he beheaded a great snake
and birthed his legend.
in honesty in
quality, Panshan found his
own enlightenment
it started with an
overheard conversation -
and then a boar’s head.
talking to a man
they found universal good
and enlightenment
tall, short and long-armed -
lands once believed to be real.
does a root exist?
the heavenly band
play together to protect
us earthly wonders?
holding weight aloft
he composes a new text:
feats of days of yore.
the priest talks to him,
the heavenly child stands -
the proof of the light

it’s hard to get hepped
up about minerals (again) yet
that shell looks lovely

flying! immortality!
what a place to be!
we exist around
the tree - its roots, its branches
enrich and keep us
the moment that changed
everything - the miracle
that made the healer
start of something big:
yet it started very small,
with a see-through back.
the footsteps they carved
I follow most happily.

auspicious event.
three kings, three stories,
three pilgrims who heard the words
of enlightenment
on a lion’s back
seeking to defeat his fate -
fate cannot be fought.
always discussing,
never sitting idly by.
a new way to forge.
